So my clunky solution for situations like this when the metadata search doesn't pan out, is to do lots of research and then turn off "Don't import suspected duplicates", and import a group of images anyway. Duplicate images will now appear next to each other. So if it knows that much, it should be able to tell the user. Clearly if it's suspecting an import is a dupe, then in its database it has some existing image in mind that's the prior copy. This Finding Duplicate Photos in Lightroom.
